The Royal Naval College was founded by the Order in Council of 16 January, 1873.  The initial establishment was comprised of a Flag Officer as President, a Captain, Royal Navy, a Director of Studies, and Professors of Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, and of Fortification, and others as needed.

The Royal Naval College was founded by the Order in Council of 16 January, 1873. The initial establishment was comprised of a Flag Officer as President, a Captain, Royal Navy, a Director of Studies, and Professors of Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, and of Fortification, and others as needed.

Additional recreation rooms were constructed in 1877 after a racket court had been built featuring large medallion portraits of Nelson, Howe and other naval heroes where they could clearly be seen from the river.[1]
