Commander (retired) Robert Henry Douglas Lane, (15 February, 1896 – 27 April, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Charles M. R. Douglas Lane, Esq., gentleman.

Upon passing out of the Training Establishment on 15 September, 1913, Lane was appointed to H.M.S. Africa. He served in her until being appointed to the H.M.S. Hindustan on 5 November, 1915. On 16 February, 1916, he was appointed to the H.M.S. Contest of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla, in which he fought at the Battle of Jutland.[1]

Soon after the battle, he moved to Nonpareil. In late August 1917 he joined Patriot, where he served through the end of the war, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1917.[2]

Lane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1925.[3]

World War II

Lane was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 15 February, 1941. He was killed on 27 April, 1941 when his command, Wryneck was lost.[4]
