Commander (retired) John Bertram Mitford, O.B.E., R.N. (6 June, 1899 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of B. G. Mitford, Esq., stockbroker.

Mitford passed out of the Training Establishment as the war broke out, and served in Russell until being appointed to King Edward VII on 8 November, 1915. On 5 February, 1916 he was appointed to Orion, in which he fought at the Battle of Jutland. He remained with the ship until 8 October, 1917.[1]

Later that year, he requested service in submarines and on 4 March 1918 he was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in the type. On 28 May, he was appointed to Ambrose to serve in submarines.[2]

Mitford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1920.[3]

Mitford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1928.[4]

Mitford had an incredibly long final appointment, to Dolphin for duty Class I with submariners and for drafting duty, vice Alexander, from 9 April, 1937 to 9 October, 1945.[5]

World War II

Mitford was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 6 June, 1944.[6]
