Vice-Admiral SIR Ian Murray Robertson Campbell, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O.* (8 August, 1898 – 15 April, 1980) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of a Colonel in the Indian Army.[1]

Campbell's was appointed to his first ship, the light cruiser H.M.S. Nottingham, in August, 1914. On 8 October, he was appointed to the battlecruiser Tiger. He suffered an injury to his left foot and was transferred top Rothesay Hospiptal on 7 October, 1915. He was found fit on 24 November and ordered to rejoin Tiger.

He would fight in Tiger at the Battle of Jutland. At some point, he was docked twelve months' seniority for misconduct, perhaps in October, 1916, and he was moved to Benbow. Quarterly reports were called for. In the event, they proved quite positive and were discontinued in mid-1917.[2]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1919.[3]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1927.[4]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1933.[5]

World War II

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1940.[6]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 January, 1950.[7]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 18 March, 1953. He retired on 12 July, 1956.[8]
