H.M.S. Wear was one of 36 destroyers of the "River" class.

Service

In February 1908 Wear was one of seven "Rivers" of the Nore Destroyer Flotilla taken into Sheerness Dockyard for refitting, during which time three 12-pdr guns were mounted in lieu of five 6-pdrs, which were deemed too light to be useful.[9]

In April, 1908, she was one of ten Rivers expected to arrive at Portsmouth in order to have H.M.S. Vernon install wireless telegraphy equipment in them.[10]

Wear was detached from the Eastern Destroyer Group at Harwich as part of one of two divisions of "River" class destroyers sent on 3 June 1908 to escort the King and Queen on a visit to Russia. The muscle in this escort was to be the cruisers Natal, Cochrane, Minotaur and Achilles.[11]

On 11 April, 1913, Eden which had recently completed a retubing refit was recommissioned at Haulbowline to replace Wear.[12]

In mid-1913, Wear was at Haulbowline.[13]

In April 1914, Wear completed to full complement at Chatham from a crew drawn from the Devonport depot so that she could proceed to Gibraltar in company with the second class protected cruiser Sirius. A change in plans resulted in Black Prince replacing Sirius for this leg. Once in Gibraltar, she was to be placed in the hands of a C. & M. party for a refit, and her crew was to return to Devonport in Vigilant in company with the destroyer Eclipse.[14][15]

While under the command of Captain Metcalfe on 8 March, 1915, Wear sped to the scene of the French battleship Bouvet's explosion and rescued 66 men from the water while under fire from shore batteries. That same evening, she provided the same service for Irresistible, rescuing more than 600 from the listing battleship.[16]
