H.M.S. Itchen was one of 36 destroyers of the "River" class.

Service

In mid-1913, she was operating with the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla.[9] On the afternoon of 18 May, one of her boats was swamped off Granton, resulting in the loss of seven of the twenty men from Itchen, Kale and Ure aboard.[10]

In January 1915, under the command of Lt. Cdr. Herbert Maynard Denny, she collided with a trawler. On 28 January, she ran into the wall of Immingham Dock. Both of these accidents prompted a caution from the Admiral of Patrols.

On 11 May 1915, Denny was superseded in command by Frederic Graham Schurr, who would command the ship until late October 1915.
