"Not very bright".
"He is still lacking in tact."
Life & Career
The son of an Australian farmer, Cavaye gained a half months' time on passing out of the Training Establishment. His first naval appointment, to London in the Channel, is dated 15 September 1908. Some time in 1909, he was moved into the new battlecruiser Invincible in the Home Fleet. Late in 1909, he went to Temeraire, followed soon by Warrior, Amazon and Prince of Wales, the last commencing on 15 September, 1910.[1]
Cavaye was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 December, 1911.[2]
On 27 September 1912, he commenced six months' Engine Room training, completing this on 26 March 1913. On 1 June 1913, Cavaye was loaned to the Royal Australian Navy, travelling out in the Sydney. He would transfer to Encounter at some later point. Cavaye was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1913. Cavaye continued to serve in the R.A.N. until returning home in 1915.[3]
On 9 August 1917, Cavaye was appointed in command of Racoon, but only remained with her until she paid off one month later, at which time he was appointed in command of Wolverine. Wolverine was lost, along with two men in a collision on 12 December off Northwest Ireland. A Court of Enquiry into her loss found no blame attributable to Wolverine's crew.[4][5]
Cavaye was appointed in command of the destroyer Tancred on 5 January, 1918.[6]
Post-War
On 1 April, 1919, Cavaye was again lent to the R.A.N. This appointment extended to 9 August, 1922 when he reverted to the Royal Navy.
Cavaye was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 December, 1921.[7]
In 1927, Cavaye was scolded for discrepancies in the victualling stores of Vansittart.[8]
Cavaye was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 25 June, 1934.[9]
World War II
Cavaye commenced service with the Royal Australian Navy on 2 September 1939. He reverted to the Retired List on 20 October 1945.[10]
