H.M.S. Boyne (1904)
Pendant Number: N.68 (1914)
D.12 (Sep 1915)
H.23 (Sep 1918)[1]
Builder: Hawthorn Leslie & Company[2]
Ordered: 1903-04 Programme[3]
Laid down: 16 Feb, 1904[4]
Launched: 12 Sep, 1904[5]
Commissioned: May, 1905[6]
Broken up: 1919[7]

H.M.S. Boyne was one of 36 destroyers of the "River" class.

Service

She and ten other "Rivers" of the Devonport Reserve followed the scout cruiser H.M.S. Skirmisher from Plymouth on 21 August 1905 for a practice cruise along the Devon and Cornish coasts.[8]

On 29 August, 1905, as the force engaged in exercises at Torbay, Boyne was struck in the stern by Leopard as the formation was changed. Leopard had been following Boyne when Leopard's steering gear malfunctioned. Collision mats were able to stem the damage while the two destroyers made their way back to Devonport under escort of H.M.S. Liffey.[9]

In mid-1913, she was in a patrol flotilla, the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla.[10]

Operating with the Devonport Local Defence Flotilla from early 1915 until joining the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla in August, 1917. She remained with 7 D.F. operating off the East Coast of England until January, 1919 when she was sent "temporarily" to the Nore.

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

The conflict between Collins and Dundas is noted.
