Commander (retired) William Vesey Hamilton Harris, M.V.O., D.S.C., R.N. (21 February, 1891 – 21 December, 1949) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Admiral Sir Robert H. Harris.
Harris was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1914.
Post-War
Harris was appointed in command of the destroyer Spitfire on 4 January, 1919.[1]
On 11 March, 1920, he was appointed in command of Charles Legg. On 19 June, 1920 he was appointed to Seabear for Reserve Fleet Exercises. On 19 August, he was placed in command of Fraser Eaves for a month and a day.
On 14 November 1921, he was appointed in command of the fishery protection trawler Dee. He left her when he was appointed in command of Burslem on 30 November, 1923.
Harris was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1922.
On 4 September, 1928, he was again appointed in command of the fishery protection trawler Dee. This tenure lasted exactly two years.
Harris was promoted to the rank of Commander on 26 March, 1931.
World War II
Harris held a number of appointments, including being appointed as Captain of Minesweepers, Dover on 1 March, 1940 as well as work on the staff of the Flag Officer in Charge, Liverpool before being appointed in command of the sloop Kingfisher (vice Graves) and then the armed merchant cruiser Carthage (vice Cookson).
