Life & Career

The son of a manufacturer, Lawrence transferred into the Royal Navy from the R.N.R., with a reputation for merchant service work which Captain Longden would assert (in 1921) made him appear "slow". He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 19 December, 1914.[1]

On 1 April, 1916, he was appointed to the "S" Class submarine S 1.[2]

Lawrence was appointed in command of the destroyer Amazon on 12 November, 1918.[3]

Lawrence was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 19 December, 1922.[4]

On 22 January 1926, he lost some ammunition from Wrestler and failed to notice the discrepancy.[5]

In December, 1926 he received a negative evaluation from Admiral Osmond de Beauvoir Brock. In 1928, there was a Court of Enquiry into a collision between the minesweeper Dundalk, under Lawrence's command, and H.M.S. Dunoon. It was concluded that the collision was entirely Lawrence's fault.[6]

He became a specialist in aerial photography.[7]

Lawrence was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander (retired) on 16 June, 1934.[8]
