Captain (retired) Gordon Reinhold Bald, (4 November, 1885 – 28 September, 1956) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of retired Colonel R. B. Bald was born in Colchester, Essex.
Bald was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1906.
On 25 August, 1911, he qualified for torpedo duties with 1,521 marks out of 2,000.
On 13 December, 1912, appointed to Antrim of the Third Cruiser Squadron as torpedo officer. His journals at the National Maritime Museum purportedly detail his service during this time, and the general nature of torpedo training in the period.
Bald was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1914.
On 20 August, 1915, he was appoitned from Antrim to Vernon for torpedo duties. He stayed two months and was appointed to Resolution as torpedo officer on 8 October, 1915.
In March, 1918, he was granted permission to visit France while on leave.
Bald was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1918 and was superseded in Resolution on 18 July, 1918 and sent to Revenge, additional, for duty on the staff of Admiral Madden.
Post-War
On 8 April, 1919, he was made Fleet Torpedo Officer, serving as such in Queen Elizabeth until February 1921. He had requested permission to return to Spain to study in hopes of qualifying as interpreter. On 10 April, 1921, appointed to study Spanish in Spain for four months. He qualified as an acting interpreter in October. The Commander-in-Chief recommended that he be made the second officer in a ship upon his return.
On 4 September 1923, appointed for two years to Malaya as executive officer, also as an Acting Interpreter in Spanish.
Bald was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 6 November, 1931.
World War II
