Lieutenant Gerald Ernest Berkeley Carter (5 August, 1886 – 4 August, 1915) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Carter was born in Dalhousie, India.
Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1908.[1]
He was appointed to Forth for the submarine B 3 on 15 February, 1909 and remained in her for just about one month before being appointed to Vulcan for C 22 in lieu of a sub-lieutenant on 19 March.[2]
In September 1910, he was found to have made an error in judgement which damaged C 28 in coming alongside Dundee Pier, although his service record does not indicate he was ever appointed to her. His appointment to C 22 would elapse on 2 December, 1910.[3]
Carter was appointed in command of the submarine C 33 on 2 December, 1910.[4]
He married Mary Scott McGregor-Robinson on 1 June, 1912.[5]
He was killed on the day before his 29th birthday when C 33 was mined while shadowing the armed trawler Malta in an attempt to ambush a U-boat.
