Admiral Francis Alban Arthur Giffard Tate, Royal Navy, Retired (7 June, 1853 – 4 January, 1930) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

His son, Alban Edward Trevor Tate born in 1890, would also serve in the navy.[1]

At some point after 1897, Francis Tate changed his name to Alban Giffard Tate.[2]

Life & Career

Tate was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 27 October, 1877.[3]

Tate was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1891.[4]

Captain

Tate was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1897.[5]

He was appointed as captain of the battleship Hannibal on 1 October, 1903,[6] and then of the Hindustan on 12 July, 1905.[7]

Flag Rank

Tate was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 July, 1907.[8]

Tate was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 30 July, 1912, vice Neville. In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List on the 31st at his own request.[9] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 9 June, 1916.[10]

Among the mourners at his funeral were Admiral of the Fleet Sir Arthur Fanshawe, Admirals C. G. Dicken, T. H. M. Jerram, R. Nelson Ommanney, E. R. le Marchant, and John Denison, Vice-Admirals A. K. Betty and H. P. Routh and Rear-Admiral A. C. S. Hughes-D'Aeth as well as ten further R.N. officers of lower ranks.[11]
