The Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine[1] (often abbreviated to k.u.k. Kriegsmarine) was the navy of Austria-Hungary from the formation of the Dual Monarchy in 1867 until its end in 1918. Austria-Hungary (also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire) bordered its historical enemy, Italy, to the West and had a significant stretch of coastline to defend on the Eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea.
