Air Vice Marshal Arthur Vyell Vyvyan, C.B., D.S.O., R.N., R.A.F. (12 March, 1875 – 30 September, 1935) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

With some degree of inference, we can say he was prepared for examinations and entry at H.M.S. Britannia by the tutoring of Reverend S. T. Briscoe, M.A., who had formerly been the Master of Navy Class at Portsmouth Grammar School.[1] Vyvyan placed tenth in order of merit upon entry, scoring 1167 marks.

Vyvyan was promoted to Lieutenant on 14 January, 1896.[2]

Vyvyan was promoted to Commander on 30 June, 1906.[3]

Vyvyan was promoted to Captain on 30 June, 1913.[4]

He served as Assistant to the Chief of the Staff while working with the Admiralty War Staff from January, 1913 until October, 1914 when he was appointed to the light cruiser Cordelia, to assume command upon her commissioning.[5]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Endymion upon her arrival at Mudros in June 1915, and commanded her through January 1916.[6]

On 1 April 1918, Vyvyan was appointed in command of Air Force Units in the Mediterranean as Brigadier General on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief.[7]

He ultimately became an Air Vice Marshal with a permanent commission on 1 August, 1919.
