Vice-Admiral SIR Alfred Englefield Evans, C.B., K.B.E., Royal Navy (31 January, 1884 – 29 December, 1944) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Cape Colony, Evans was raised by his uncle, A. H. Evans, Esquire.[1]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[2]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.[3]

Evans was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 16 on 10 March, 1914.[4] It was transferred to the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla, operating out of Devonport, and its twelve T.Bs. were in a reduced state, seemingly under Evans's sole oversight.[5]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1917.[6]

On 4 December, 1917, Evans was appointed in command of the destroyer Michael.[7]

Post-War

Evans was appointed in command of the destroyer Vectis on 27 August, 1920.[8]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1924.[9]

In January, 1927, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Birmingham.

Evans was appointed in command of the light cruiser Calcutta in September, 1928.

He was Captain of the Fleet for a considerable time, spanning from his first appointment in Nelson under Chatfield on 26 April, 1930, with Chatfield being replaced by Hodges on 27 May, 1930. Finally, Admiral Sir John Kelly took the senior position on 60 October, 1931. Evans was superseded as Captain of the Fleet on 19 August, 1933.[10]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 October, 1935.[11]

He was awarded the Star of Order of German Red Cross for services he rendered in connection with the German pocket battleship Deutschland after she had been bombed by Republican aircraft off the coast of Spain.[12]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 29 June, 1939 and placed on the Retired List the next day.[13]

World War II

On 16 September, 1939, he was appointed to Eaglet II with rank of Commodore, Second Class R.N.R.. On 1 July, 1940, he was appointed for special service outwside the Admiralty with the rank of Vice-Admiral.[14]

He was "presumed killed" on 29 December, 1944, but I have not been able to find out what this implies.[15]
