H.M.S. Whirlwind was one of twenty-one "W" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1917-18.
Service
Whirlwind immediately joined the Dover Patrol's Sixth Destroyer Flotilla upon commissioning in March, 1918.[7]
She re-commissioned on 10 December, 1920.[8]
Whirlwind was re-commissioned on 3 May, 1923 to serve with the First Destroyer Flotilla as part of the Atlantic Fleet.[9]
She was re-commissioned on 6 January, 1926 for service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic Fleet.[10]
Re-commissioned on 4 September, 1928 for service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic Fleet.[11]
Re-commissioned at Chatham on 18 November, 1930 for continued service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic Fleet.[12] She remained with them into at least 1933 after that formation became attacked to Home Fleet.[13]
Commissioned in Reserve at The Nore on 25 May, 1934.[14]
Reduced to Reserve at The Nore on 22 October, 1934.[15]
In 1935, her bell was one of several ships' bells the Royal Navy offered for sale to officers and others interested. It attracted a price of £1-£5, and men were to apply to win one at the fixed price, stating any special attachment or claim they had to the item(s) applied for.[16]
