Alfred Dudley Pickman Rogers Pound
Admiral of the Fleet SIR Alfred Dudley Pickman Rogers Pound, G.C.B., O.M., G.C.V.O., Royal Navy (29 August, 1877 – 21 October, 1943) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
In the examination for cadetships in the Royal Navy held on 25 November, 1890, Pound placed first out of fifty-seven successful candidates, with 1,846 marks.[1]
On 16 October, 1897, Pound was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 29 August, 1896.[2]
On 29 August, 1898, Pound was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.[3]
In 1904, Pound was thanked for his work creating a system of deflection sights.[4]
In 1909, Pound was appointed to President, additional, as an Assistant to D.N.O.[5]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1909.[6]
Captain
Pound was appointed in command of the battleship Colossus on 24 October, 1915,[7] and commanded her at the Battle of Jutland as part of the First Battle Squadron[8] He wrote her after-action report on the battle.
On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1919.[9]
Pound was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V on 1 January, 1925, vice Parker.[10]
Flag Rank
Pound was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 March, 1926.[11]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 May, 1930, vice Fuller.[12]
Pound was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 16 January, 1935, vice Preston.[13]
First Sea Lord
Pound was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on 31 July, 1939, vice Tyrwhitt.[14]
On 1 October, 1941, Pound was appointed First and Principal Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George VI, vice Drax.[15]
Mrs. Sheila de Molyns, the daughter of Pound's former admiral in Colossus, acidly noted of his death: "It probably suited Churchill."[16]
