Vice-Admiral (retired) Dashwood Fowler Moir, (16 August, 1880 – 8 August, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In February, 1902, Moir was "favourably mentioned in connection with the expedition up the Niger River."[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.[2]

In early 1907, he received his first command, that of T.B. 7. He damaged her propellor and it was determined that he had shown a "want of judgment". He was told to be more cautious in future. Greater misfortune followed when a dinghy capsized in the Firth of Forth and an Able Bodied seaman lost his life. Moir was found to have "failed in his duty in not making known to officers under his command certain local orders as to the use of boats from torpedo craft in the Firth of Forth." In 1908 Fleet Exercises, Moir failed to make a rendezvous because he failed to carefully read the signal giving position.[3]

Moir was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1910.[4]

He was appointed in command of destroyer Ariel in January 1912. A very favourable inspection of her declared her "a model of cleanliness of gd order."[5]

Moir was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1914.[6]

Moir would command Ariel at the Battle of Dogger Bank and the Battle of Heligoland Bight. He remained with Ariel until October 1914, when he took command of destroyer Goshawk.

He commanded Goshawk at the Battle of Jutland[7] and commanded a division of the First Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

He commanded Vimiera between 1917 and March, 1918 and led a division of destroyers before being given charge of Valhalla on 16 July, 1918.[9]

Their Lordships determined that a collision between Conqueror and Wrestler on 30 October, 1918 showed a lack of care in handling the Flotilla, although Moir was considered only partly to blame.[10]

Post-War

He left Valhalla in January of 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1919,[11] a rank which afforded him command opportunities in flotilla command.

On 21 December, 1920, he commanded the flotilla leader Bruce as Captain (D) of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla. At some point in 1921, he moved his pennant to flotilla leader Mackay, hauling it down on 15 January, 1923.[12]

In 1925-26, he served as Flag Captain at Malta Dockyard.[13]

Moir was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 19 July, 1931 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[14]

Moir was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 2 January, 1936.[15]

World War II

In 1940, Moir incurred Their Lordships' "severe displeasure" and was not to receive further employment as commodore of convoys. A period of illness followed in April, 1941 and it was not until September that he was again found to be fit. He was returned, then, to the Liverpool Convoy Pool to serve in the rank of Commodore, Second Class R.N.R..[16]

Moir was killed when, as Commodore of Convoy SC-94 traveling from Sydney to Britian, his ship Trehata was torpedoed southeast of Cape Farewell.[17]
