Captain Hugh Trevor Prichard (13 March, 1877 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Prichard gained six months' time on passing out of Britannia and being appointed to Hawke, in the Mediterranean, in August, 1893. He was invalided from her with fever on 12 October 1895. He was not fit until 2 March, 1896. he was immediately appointed back to the Mediterranean, this time in the battleship Royal Sovereign. After a brief period in a training brig, Prichard found himself back in Royal Sovereign, but this time in the Channel Squadron.[1]

Prichard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1900. He spent the next five years serving in a variety of appointments predominately in cruisers before receiving his first sea-going command appointment as captain of the destroyer Snapper, on 14 August, 1905.[2]

In December, 1907, Prichard was reprimanded by the Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth for his manner in dealing with a customs official, and for failing to see that Regulations were abided by in his handling of passes.[3]

On 12 May 1908, he was approved to return to England for 30 days full pay leave to attend to private affairs. On 5 July, he was placed in temporary command of Orion, which was then a depot ship for torpedo boats at Malta during the absence of Commander (D) Henry FitzRoy George Talbot.[4]

Prichard was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1912 while in the midst of three year appointment to the Pembroke Royal Naval Barracks.[5]

After spending a year in the battleship Implacable of the Second Fleet, Prichard was appointed in command of the destroyer Thrasher on 23 January, 1914.[6]

Great War

Prichard commanded Thrasher until October 1914, when he was placed in command of the destroyer Griffon.[7]

An appointment in command of the destroyer Osprey in February, 1914 was not carried out, and Prichard remained in command of Griffon until being appointed in command to Kempenfelt on 16 June, 1915, to take command upon her commissioning. He was to command Swift upon handing Kempenfelt over to Walter Lingen Allen in August, 1915, but this was altered to the Oak and then to Marmion. Prichard likely went directly from Kempenfelt to Marmion. Before August was out, however, Prichard transferred to Comet.[8]

In November 1915, Prichard moved from command of Comet to Minstrel. He was superseded by John Lanison Field just eleven days later, having come down with gastroenteritis.[9]

On 10 February, Prichard was deemed fit for shore service only. On 23 March, 1916 this restriction was removed as he had been found generally fit. On 29 March, he was appointed in command of Cameleon.

On 20 October, Prichard was in the sick quarters at Bereshaven. Further service in destroyers was deemed inadvisable on account of his health. On 1 November 1916, Prichard left Cameleon. Initially, he was to go to H.M.S. Devonshire, but this was altered to an appointment at the Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth. He would serve there through the end of the war.

Post-War

Prichard was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1918.[10]

Following some appointments in command of Lightfoot and Abdiel and as Assistant Captain (D) of the Nore Reserve Flotilla, Prichard took a Senior Officers' Technical Course and a Senior Officers' War Course before being placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 June, 1922.[11]
