H.M.S. Erne was one of 36 destroyers of the "River" class.

Service

In February 1908 Erne was one of seven "Rivers" of the Nore Destroyer Flotilla taken into Sheerness Dockyard for refitting, during which time three 12-pdr guns were mounted in lieu of five 6-pdrs, which were deemed too light to be useful.[7]

Erne was paid off into Dockyard hands at Sheerness for a refit after being relieved by Afridi on 18 September, 1909, slated to be re-commissioned on 23 October for service with the Second Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

Erne left Devonport for Haulbowline Royal Dockyard to be refitted on 4 October 1910, and was photographed in a considerable state of undress in the newly-extended No. 1 Dock on 28 April, 1911, with her armament unshipped and her port engine cover removed. Given this, it is surprising to read that The Times reported that, subject to her exercises being completed, Erne was to leave Falmouth on 3 May 1911 for Sheerness under the lead of Diamond in company with sisters Cherwell, Teviot and Ure.[9] Around June 13th, Diamond took the destroyers from Sheerness for the Downs, accompanied by eight further "Rivers".[10]

In mid-1913, Erne was in Ninth Destroyer Flotilla, a patrol flotilla.[11]

On 2 February, 1914, she was one of five Rivers of the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla paid off at Sheerness and Chatham, immediately recommissioning with new crews.[12]
