Admiral Douglas Lionel Dent, C.B., C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (7 August, 1869 – 11 July, 1959) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dent became a Lieutenant on 14 August, 1889.[1]

Dent was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1901.[2]

He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Æolus on 2 July, 1906.[3]

Captain

On 30 June, 1908, Dent was promoted to the rank of Captain.[4]

He was appointed to Blenheim, in command, on 31 March, 1910.[Citation needed]

On 1 May, 1912, he was appointed Captain Superintendent of Destroyers Building by Contract.[5]

Great War

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[6]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Irresistible on 4 January, 1915, and survived her sinking at the Dardanelles. Following her loss he was appointed to Hussar as Harbour Master at Mudros and Captain Superintendent. In April he was appointed as Principal Transport Officer.

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Edgar in June ,1915[7] and remained in her until being appointed to command the battleship Prince of Wales on 8 June, 1916.[8] On 16 June, 1917, he was appointed in command of the battleship Centurion in the Grand Fleet, and assumed command on 22 June.[9]

Post-War

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1919.[10] On 9 June he was appointed to President as President of the Fire Control Tables Committee.[11]

Dent was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 August, 1919, vice Tancred[12] and was appointed Director of Naval Equipment in succession to Rear-Admiral Edward F. Bruen, dated 2 May, 1922.[13]

Promotion to Vice-Admiral came on 1 January, 1925.[14] Dent was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 6 August, 1926,[15] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 27 February, 1929.[16]
