Commander (retired) Ernest Loftus Colley-Grattan, D.S.O., R.N. (24 June, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy. Defective vision and other faults would end his active naval career shortly after becoming a Lieutenant.

Life & Career

Colley-Grattan ranked twenty-first among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2363 marks.[1]

Colley-Grattan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 August, 1905. In February 1906, he was appointed to receive a year's instruction in submarines, following which he was appointed to Mercury for command of an unspecified submarine on 15 February, 1907. On 20 August, 1908, he was explicitly appointed in command of C 10. However, in August 1909, the Inspecting Captain of Submarines reported him unfit for command of a submarine, having an insufficient sense of responsibility for command of a submarine, but suited to general service. He was removed from C 10, suffering from jaundice and eventually placed in the armoured cruiser Aboukir of the Sixth Cruiser Squadron on 17 January, 1910.[2]

His naval career would be further crimpled when on 6 August 1912 he was admitted to Plymouth Hospital to be evaluated for defective vision. On the 14th, Colley-Grattan was declared unfit for active service, but his name was retained on the Navy List for shore service in the event of war.[3]

In September, 1913, he conveyed that he wanted his name to be Ernest Loftus Colley Grattan.[4]

Grattan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 August, 1913.[5]

Grattan was placed on the Retired List on 22 July, 1921 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 24 June, 1924.[6]
