Admiral of the Fleet Andrew Browne Cunningham, First Viscount Cunningham, K.T., G.C.B., O.M., D.S.O., (7 January, 1883 – 12 June, 1963) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cunningham entered the Royal Navy with the January, 1897 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia, passing in fourteenth of sixty-three in order of merit with 1408 marks in the competitive entrance examinations.[1]

Cunningham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March, 1904.[2]

Cunningham was appointed in command of the destroyer Scorpion on 10 January, 1911.[3]

Cunningham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 March, 1912.[4]

Cunningham was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.[5]

Cunningham was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919.[6]

On 29 March, 1918, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Termagant.[7]

On 11 May, 1926, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Calcutta.[8]

World War II

Cunningham participated in historic actions in the Mediterranean in a legendary fashion. They are great in extent, as you can see in his career box below, but fall outside our present scope of study, so that I should direct you to Wikipedia for a worthy narrative of his deeds.
