H.M.S. Rowena was one of sixty-two "R" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1916-17.

Service

Rowena was assigned to the Fifteenth Destroyer Flotilla in October, 1916, as it was still building up to strength.[8]

She arrived at Dover in company with Rigorous and Restless on 1 September, 1919,[9] and proceeded to Devonport, arriving on 11 October.[10] She was then reduced to reserve at Devonport on 16 October, 1919.[11]

Rowena re-commissioned at Devonport on 27 April, 1920,[12] and proceeded to Gibraltar in company with Romola. They arrived there on 8 May.[13]

She re-commissioned at Devonport on 8 March, 1922.[14]

On 21 April, 1925 she departed Devonport for Rosyth.[15]

She paid off into Dockyard Control at Rosyth on 19 June, 1925[16] for a refit which was to last until November.[17]

Her basin trial at Rosyth was to occur about 20 March 1926, after which a Portsmouth crew was to commission her and take her down to that port where her trials would be completed and she was then to be paid off into reserve.[18]

She was re-commissioned on 1 July 1926 for service with the Portland Anti-Submarine Flotilla.[19]

In January 1928 she underwent a refit at Chatham.[20]

She was re-commissioned on 1 July, 1933 for service with the First Anti-Submarine Flotilla out of Portland.[21]

After many years of continuous operation with the Anti-Submarine Flotilla out of Portland and a brief stint as Local Defence destroyers based on Alexandria, Thruster, Torrid and Rowena paid off into Reserve at The Nore on 11 June, 1936.[22]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

It is not clear whether Crohan actually got a chance to command her, given the dates.
