The Paymaster Director-General was an appointment in the Royal Navy. On 6 March, 1918, Paymaster-in-Chief Sir John H. G. Chapple was appointed Paymaster Director-General in the Second Sea Lord's office with the relative rank of Rear-Admiral.[1] The pay was a consolidated rate of £1,200 a year. Retirement was "To be compulsory after 5 years' service in the rank of Paymaster Director-General, or at the age of 60."[2] It was therefore apparently in the nature of a temporary rank as upon retirement on 1 July Chapple became a Paymaster-in-Chief on the Retired List.
