H.M.S. Philomel was one of nine cruisers of the Pearl class completed for the Royal Navy in 1891 and 1892.
Service
Paid off at Devonport on 1 March, 1898[6] to be refitted for foreign service.[7]
In May, 1906 it was ordered that three cruisers should tow the obsolete Rinaldo, Philomel and Medusa from the Firth of Forth to the Motherbank, where they were to be moored.[8]
Philomel relieved the second class protected cruiser Venus on the Mediterranean Station in February, 1908, allowing Venus to join the Atlantic Fleet.[9]
Philomel re-commissioned at Aden on 4 October, 1911 for service in the East Indies.[10]
She left Colombo on 14 October, 1912, bound for Bombay.[11]
Philomel arrived at Colombo under the command of Commander George Norman Ballard on 29 September 1913, and left on 2 October for Singapore.[12]
From the start of the war through April, 1917, she operated as a training cruiser out of New Zealand under the command of Captain Percival H. Hall Thompson, where operations took her to the Indian Ocean, the Suez and off the Syrian coast.[13] In April, 1917
The cruiser re-commissioned "abroad" on 20 April, 1917.[14] Presumably, this meant she was back in New Zealand, on account of her antiquated nature.
She re-commissioned in Wellington, New Zealand on 1 March, 1921. By March 1925 she was serving as a training and depot ship at Auckland,[15] serving there through at least mid-1937.[16]
