Commander (retired) Ernald Gilbert Hoskins Master, D.S.O., R.N. (1 April, 1887 – 21 July, 1929) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Master was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1908.[1]

On 31 May, 1912, he was admitted to Haslar Hospital to be treated for gonorrhea and syphilis. He was declared fit on 1 July, 1912.[2]

Master was appointed in command of the destroyer Sylvia on 9 March, 1914.[3]

Great War

On 15 April, 1916, Master was recommended for appointment to a more modern destroyer than Sylvia. Six days later, this leverage resulted in his being appointed in command of the Acasta Class destroyer Contest.

Master was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1916.[4]

Master commanded the destroyer Contest when she operated with the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[5]

Master was sick for approximately one month, beginning on 8 June, 1918.[6]

On 27 September, 1918, Master was appointed in command of the destroyer Tactician.[7]

Post-War

Master was appointed in command of the destroyer Whitley on 13 October, 1919.[8] He would be awarded the D.S.O. for distinguished services in command of that vessel in 1919, gazetted 8 March, 1920. On 17 February, 1920, however, he grounded Whitley and a Court of Enquiry faulted him for a general lack of care in navigation preceding the incident. Nonetheless, Commodore Tweedie recommended him for promotion in December 1919 and also in June, 1920.[9]

On 15 December, 1921 he was appointed from Whitley to take command of the destroyer Turbulent and of a group of destroyers in reserve. On 15 March, 1922, he was superseded in command of Turbulent, but retained command of some reserve destroyers. Such caretaking work, interspersed with unpaid time, would keep him busy until 2 July, 1928.[10]

Following a half year's appointment in Impregnable, Master was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 24 May, 1929.[11]

Master died very soon thereafter, in a motor accident on 21 July, 1929.[12]
