Admiral Sir William H. Henderson.

Admiral SIR William Hannam Henderson, K.B.E., Royal Navy (20 June, 1845 – 29 April, 1931) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

William Hannam Henderson was born at Worth, near Sandwich, on 20 June, 1845. He was the eldest of four brothers born to John Henderson, J.P., and Laura, daughter of Henry Pett Hannam. His brothers were Reginald Friend Hannam Henderson (later an Admiral and knighted), Frank Hannam Henderson (later Vice-Admiral on the Retired List), and John Henderson, who retired as a Commander.

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 11 September, 1866.[1]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1879.[2]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1886.[3]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 20 November, 1899, vice Andoe.[4]

On 28 March, 1900, he was appointed a Member of the Privy Council of Jamaica, and a nominated Member of the Legislature of Jamaica.[5]

Henderson succeeded Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas S. Jackson as Admiral Superintendent of Devonport Dockyard on 11 July, 1902.[6] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 27 November, 1904, vice Pattisson.[7] He was succeeded at Devonport by Rear-Admiral Charles J. Barlow on 1 April, 1906.[8] On 21 August he was appointed a Commissioner of a Royal Commission on the management of British coastal lights, buoys and beacons.[9]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 30 June, 1908, vice Pearson.[10] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 July.[11]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) on 3 June, 1924.[12]
