Frank Hannam Henderson

Vice-Admiral Frank Hannam Henderson, C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (2 June, 1850 – 26 June, 1918) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Henderson was specially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 December, 1872 for capturing a dhow.[1]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 June, 1887 and suffered a period of debility due to fever from 1 August to 21 September, 1887. Restored to health, on 24 October, 1888 he married Agnes Jane Burgess.[2]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1894.[3]

Henderson was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Fox in January, 1898.

He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Hermes on 5 October, 1899.[4]

Henderson was appointed in command of the battleship Goliath in July, 1902.

He was placed on the Retired List on account of age on 2 June, 1905 and advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 11 July, 1905.[5]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 30 April, 1910.[6]

The Great War

Henderson was appointed to President for Special Service in September, 1917 as A.E.S. Carrigan Head as a Retired Rear Admiral, hoisting his flag on 9 September. He worked in her as Escort Flag Officer of Mercantile Corps, but he was temporarily relieved in command in April, 1918. He was awarded a D.S.O. for his brief work, gazetted on 3 June. He was to be sent to Camito to continue his escort work, but this was cancelled, perhaps due to health.[7]

Henderson died of heart failure, possibly provoked by an issue in his right tonsil, in Haslar Hospital on 26 June. His D.S.O. was forwarded to his widow, Agnes, on the 28th. She received it on the 30th.[8]
