Construction
Monterey's planned armament was much heavier: one 16-inch and one 12-inch gun plus a 15-inch pneumatic "dynamite gun" in the bow. The massive 110 ton 16-incher's slow rate of fire, plus weight concerns, led to a less spectacular main battery being substituted and the dynamite gun being omitted altogether.[8][9]
