Norman Friedman (1946 – ) is an American naval historian of the modern era who has written extensively on the ships and naval technologies of the modern era.

His informationally dense books describe the ships of the United States Navy and Royal Navy extensively, and those of other navies to a lesser degree.

His Naval Firepower: Battleship Guns and Gunnery in the Dreadnought Era is an ambitious effort to bring fire control to a popular audience, but in doing so seems to cover up a thin understanding of function with vague and unhelpful descriptors of systems ("analytic" versus "synthetic").
