Vice-Admiral Reginald Charles Prothero, C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (15 June, 1849 – 26 May, 1927) was an officer of the Royal Navy noted for his fair but fiery manner.

His much more even-tempered cousin, Arthur William Edward Prothero, also became a flag officer. The contrast between these two contemporaries was stark enough to earn Reginald the sobriquet of "Prothero the Bad".[1]

Early Life & Career

Prothero became a Naval Cadet in December 1862 and made Sub-Lieutenant on 22 July, 1870. Prothero was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 8 August, 1874.[2] Prothero was appointed back to Magpie in 1881, but was sent to Tyne, then Duke of Wellington and ultimately to Vernon before the end of the year. Prothero was appointed to the turret ship Devastation on 7 January 1889.

Prothero was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1889.[3]

On 7 January, 1890, Prothero was appointed to the Edinburgh, based in the Mediterranean.[4] She paid off on 6 October, 1890.

On 11 June, 1891, he was appointed to the masted turret ship Neptune,[5] and then to the Nile on 30 June.[6] This service, too, was in the Mediterranean.

Prothero was permitted fourteen days leave from 29 October 1894 and permitted by the Commander-in-Chief to proceed home, to be appointed to Achilles upon his return. In December, Captain Hammett wrote that Prothero was "one of the best executive officers in H.M. Navy."[7]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Revenge in December 1896.

He was appointed to command the second class protected cruiser Doris on 27 April, 1898.[9]

On 6 November, 1900, for his services in South Africa, Prothero was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.).[10]

He served as captain of Implacable from October 1902 through May 1904.

On the occasion of the King's visit to Malta Prothero was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 27 April, 1903.[11]
