Rear-Admiral Hugh Skinner Shipway, Royal Navy (14 March, 1880 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Shipway was born in Middlesex, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Shipway.

Shipway was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.[1]

Shipway married Mabel Young Niblett on 6 April, 1910 at St. Gabriel's in Cricklewood and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June.[2]

Shipway was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[3]

Post-War

Shipway was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919.[4]

Shipway was appointed in command of the light cruiser Dublin in October, 1922. After being superseded in September, 1924, he took a senior officer's War Course. In December, 1925 he was appointed to Hawkins, additional, on the staff of Vice-Admiral Sinclair, and as Captain in Charge, Singapore, assuming command on 9 December.[5]

Shipway was appointed in command of the battleship Malaya in November, 1929.

Shipway was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 2 July, 1932 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.[6]

World War II

Shipway was recalled to service in September, 1939 as Naval Assistant to the "D. of S. T.", remaining there until 31 October, 1942. A period of inactivity followed before he was appointed in April, 1943 to a post in London whose particulars are even harder to discern. This lasted only until 20 June.[7]
