Da Costa was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1905.[3]

In November 1906, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Niobe.[4]

In December 1907 he was made Captain of the heavy cruiser Cornwall.[5]

Da Costa assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Challenger the following March.[6]

Da Costa was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 14 June, 1916, and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order-in-Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 June.[7]

On 1 April, 1917 Da Costa was appointed a Temporary Captain in the Royal Naval Reserve,[8] being in command of Auxiliary Patrol Area XXII until being superseded on 6 June, 1918.[9]
