Captain (retired) Henry Luxmoore Hitchins, C.B.E., R.N. (23 January, 1885 – ) served in the Royal Navy. At some point, he either changed his middle name or corrected its spelling to "Luxmoor".
Life & Career
Born in Huddersfield in 1885, Hitchins ranked fiftieth among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2172 marks.[1]
Hitchins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1905 and was awarded the Goodenough Medal for 1905-06 for being the Sub-Lieutenant who achieved the highest gunnery examination while also achieving a first-class certificate in seamanship.[2]
Hitchins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1913 while appointed to Vernon, conducting W/T experiments.[3]
From January, 1914 to 8 December, 1916, he was appointed to the battleship Thunderer for torpedo duties. Thereafter, he served with the D.T.M. on the Anti-Submarine Division, which work carried him to March 1919, him being promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1917.[4]
Hitchins was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 23 January, 1931.[5]
