Lieutenant (retired) Harry Albert Bumpus, (27 October, 1871 – 27 October, 1948) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bumpus was promoted to the rank of Acting Boatswain on 1 May, 1899.[1]

On 3 March, 1911, he was made Bosun of Cyclops, remaining in that post for one year. On 14 March, 1912, he was sent to H.M.S. Indus. On 18 March of 1913 he went to join the surveying ship Fantome.

Great War

Bumpus was promoted to the rank of Chief Boatswain on 1 May, 1914. His service in Fantome continued until 20 October, 1917 when she paid off, having possibly been in charge of stores. At the end of the year, Captain Grant noted that Bumpus was "too prone to voice grievance." Early in 1918, Captain Morgan noted that he lacked knowledge but performed well when given customary tasks.[2]

Bumpus was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant as he retired on 12 August, 1922.[3]

Bumpus died of chronic myocardial degeneration on his seventy-seventh birthday, having lost his wife twelve years previously, in 1936.[4]
