H.M.S. Marathon was one of five second class protected cruisers of the Medea class completed for the Royal Navy in 1889 and 1890.

Commissioned at Portsmouth on 16 September, 1890.[6]

- Captain Robert B. Maconochie, 1 January, 1894[8] – 22 April, 1896 (invalided due to climate-related debility)
- Acting Commander Henry H. Bruce, 22 April, 1896[9] – 1897[10] (temporary, in Maconochie's absence)
- Captain John G. M. Field, 2 June, 1898[11]
