Builder: Armstrong, Whitworth & Company[1]
Ordered: Aug, 1916[2]

H.M.S. M 3 was one of three monitor submarines of the "M" class completed for the Royal Navy.

In late 1920, submarines M 1, M 2 and M 3 were allocated to submarine reserve group "C" at Portsmouth, under the collective command of Commander Hubert Vaughan-Jones and tender to Dolphin.[5]

Reduced to Reserve at Portsmouth on 15 October, 1926.[6]

M 3 was converted to a minelaying submarine in 1927. She had a capacity for 100 mines.

Completed to full complement on 8 October, 1928. By mid-1931, however, she had only a Lieutenant (E) assigned to her.[7]
