Commander (retired) George William Emil Castens, D.S.O. (15 August, 1898 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Major W. E. Castens of the Royal Artillery, Castens was a Special Entry to the Royal Navy in September, 1916. His first appointment was in the battleship King George V from 3 February 1917 through the end of the war. He qualified as an acting Interpreter in French in January 1918. In February 1919 he was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.[1]

Castens was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1920.[2]

Castens was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1928.[3]

Immediately after being treated for swollen tonsils at Haslar Hospital, Castens was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 5 October 1932 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 15 August, 1938.[4]
