The son of retired tea planter Paul de Winton.[1]

In February 1914 he was admitted to Chatham Hospital with diptheria for one month.[2]

De Winton served in H.M.S. On 2 November 1915 he was admitted to Lord [illeg] Hospital for an injury to [illeg]. He was declared fit on 13 November and he was appointed to T.B. 1 the next day.[3]

On 20 March 1916 he was appointed to Nepean, being transferred to Ferret sometime soon thereafter.

His next appointment was to Narwhal on 21 September, 1916. He left the ship for Mosquito in October, 1917 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1917.[4]

On 13 January 1919 he was sick ashore with bronchial catarrh, being allotted twelve days to recover.

De Winton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1925.[5]

In 1926 he put forward a scheme for secondary gun control in destroyers. It was not adopted, but he was thanked for his zeal and ingenuity. In 1928, when captain of Somme, de Winton was commended for his promptitude in reacting to the piracy of S.S. Team[?].[6]

De Winton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1931.[7]
