Lieutenant Eccles James Carter, R.N. (21 September, 1891 – 5 September, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Carter's father, also named Eccles Carter, was a member of the Stock Exchange.

After three and a half years' service in Lord Nelson, Waveney, Cochrane, Superb and Prince of Wales, Carter was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 May, 1912.[1]

After five months' time in the battleship King Edward VII, Carter was appointed to Nemesis on 10 October 1912. Her Lieutenant-Commander Wynter noted that Carter "deal[t] with men well".[2]

Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1914.[3]

Carter was appointed to Pathfinder on 6 May 1914 and died when she was torpedoed by U 21 on 5 September 1914.[4]
