Chatham Royal Dockyard was one of the Royal Navy's major shipyards from Elizabethan times until its closure in 1984. It formed, with Sheerness Royal Dockyard, part of the Nore Command, on the Medway. With Portsmouth and Plymouth it was one of the navy's three Home Ports. In the twentieth century it became the navy's main submarine dockyard.
