Vice-Admiral SIR Alfred Englefield Evans, C.B., K.B.E., Royal Navy (31 January, 1884 – 29 December, 1944) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Cape Colony, Evans was raised by his uncle, A. H. Evans, Esquire.[1]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[2]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.[3]

Evans was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 16 on 10 March, 1914.[4] It was transferred to the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla, operating out of Devonport, and its twelve T.Bs. were in a reduced state, seemingly under Evans's sole oversight.[5]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1917.[6]

On 4 December, 1917, Evans was appointed in command of the destroyer Michael.[7]

Post-War

Evans was appointed in command of the destroyer Vectis on 27 August, 1920.[8]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1924.[9]

In January, 1927, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Birmingham.

Evans was appointed in command of the light cruiser Calcutta in September, 1928.

He was Captain of the Fleet for a considerable time, spanning from his first appointment in Nelson under Chatfield on 26 April, 1930, with Chatfield being replaced by Hodges on 27 May, 1930. Finally, Admiral Sir John Kelly took the senior position on 60 October, 1931. Evans was superseded as Captain of the Fleet on 19 August, 1933.[10]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 October, 1935.[11]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 29 June, 1939.[12]
