Vice-Admiral Alan Cameron Bruce, C.B., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (19 January, 1873 – 20 August, 1947) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
He was appointed to at least twenty seagoing commands.
Life & Career
Born in Tor Castle, Bute, N.B..
On 2 March 1895, he was granted leave to attend to "domestic affliction."
Bruce was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Banshee in Spring of 1902.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1905.[2]
In late 1906, Proserpine collided with Cynthia and Bruce was told to be more careful in future following a Court of Enquiry. It is not immediately clear how he was involved in this misadventure, as he had left command of Cynthia some years earlier.[3]
He qualified as an acting Interpreter in French in June, 1911.
Bruce was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913.[4]
In December 1913, he assumed command of the depot ship St. George.
On 27 January, 1914, Bruce commissioned the scout cruiser Patrol and took command of the Ninth Destroyer Flotilla.[5]
He also was in command of the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla at some other point.
He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Shannon on 29 November, 1918.[6]
Bruce was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 October, 1923, vice Phillpotts. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 8 October.[7] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 6 April, 1928.[8]
