Service

The ship's stokers found "several" detonators concealed in bunker coal while on exercises in the West Bay in the morning of 2 September 1909. Commander Bruce ordered her immediate return to Portland Roads where the entire coal load was discharged to lighters. Forward had last coaled at Portsmouth from the collier Fernhill. The same collier had recently supplied coal to Duke of Edinburgh which had been found to also contain these devices.[8]

Forward re-commissioned at Chatham on 10 July, 1913.[9]
