Rear-Admiral Philip Esmonde Phillips, C.B., D.S.O., (16 June, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Phillips's scoring rank in entry and passing-out examinations showed him improving a full sixty-seven places... almost leaping from weakest to strongest performer. His performance, in passing out eighth overall with first-class results in Mathematics, Extra Subjects and Seamanship was impressive enough to merit special mention at the prize award ceremony in April, 1904.[1]

Phillips was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1909.[2]

Phillips was appointed in command of the submarine A 7 on 10 May, 1912.[3]

He was appointed in command of the submarine B 6 on 20 February, 1914.[4]

Great War

Phillips was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1917.[5]

On the night of 31 October to 1 November, 1917, Phillips was in command of the submarine E 52 when she sank the UC 63 north of the Dover Net Barrage in a surfaced night attack.[6] He was awarded the D.S.O. for this, gazetted 19 December, 1917.[7]

Phillips was in command of the submarine L 12 on 16 October, 1918 when she sank UB 90.[8] He was awarded a bar to his D.S.O. for this, gazetted 29 November, 1918.[9] On 12 November 1918, he was appointed to Lucia for submarines.

Post-War

Phillips was promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 December, 1921.[10]

Phillips was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1926.[11]

In 1935, Phillips was sent out on loan to the Royal Australian Navy for two years, serving as their Second Naval Member of the Naval Board.[12]

In September, 1939, he was made a Commodore, Second Class R.N.R. to serve as a Commodore of Convoys.

In 1941, he incurred Their Lordships' displeasure, somehow, in the loss of S.S. Behar. He returned to the Retired List in July, 1945.[13]
