Captain Gerald Langston Parnell, D.S.O., O.B.E. (15 February, 1880 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Parnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1900.
Parnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1908.[Inference]
Parnell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1912.
On 1 February 1913, he was appointed to the light cruiser Chatham as executive officer. He was relieved as in November 1913 for incompetence for having lost confidential books. A chorus of appraisers inclduing Captain Drury-Lowe indicated he was "not sufficiently in touch with offrs and men" and that he was "unsuited as exec offr."
Parnell was appointed in command of the destroyer Swale on 27 February, 1914.[1]
In January 1916 he was cautioned for having destroyed a secret paper.
In March 1916, he invented a lamp fitting for illuminating the director for a torpedo tube.
Parnell was appointed in command of the commissioned merchant vessel Perth from January, 1918 to 12 December, 1918. He assumed command on 14 March, having just been awarded a D.S.O. for his services in destroyer and T.B.D. flotillas in the period ending 31 December 1917. On 1 October 1918, he was commended for his actions in defending Convoy H. G. 109 from enemy submarine attack.
Parnell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919.
