H.M.S. Mars was a British battleship of the Majestic class, launched in 1896 and sold for scrap in 1921.
Service
Mars commissioned at Portsmouth on 8 June, 1897, Captain Reginald F. H. Henderson in command.[9]
By March 1907, she was one of sixteen battleships in the Channel Fleet, but designated, along with Canopus, Goliath and Prince George to soon transfer to the Home Fleet.[10]
In 1910, Mars was the best gunnery ship of the 27 tested in the Home Fleet's Third Division (and cruisers), scoring 72.62 – well ahead of the average 46.195.[11]
She recommissioned at Devonport on 2 January 1912.[12]
In mid-July, 1914, the ship was ordered to take up station in the Humber as part of a force of four Majestic class battleships and two Cressy class cruisers being sent there to be demobilised on the 25th. Her crew was to be transferred to Albion.[13]
Mars paid off at Invergordon on 7 July, 1920.[14]
In 1934, her bell was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £10. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[15]
Radio
As of 1901, while serving in the Channel Squadron, she had or was slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[16]
Torpedoes
In 1904, in a competition to investigate how rapidly submerged tubes could be fired four times sequentially, starting with the tube loaded and the bar out, the ship's crew was able to do this in 4 minutes, 20 seconds. The best time was achieved by Cressy at 50.75 seconds, though 2:30 was more typical.[17]
