Captain Edward Reeves (18 March, 1869 – 4 March, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lieutenant on 1 January, 1892.[1]

On 1 September, 1900, he incurred Their Lordships' severe displeasure for allowing on 11 July the first class protected cruiser Hawke to be grounded through "great carelessness and absence of precaution."[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1903.[3]

Reeves was appointed to command the light cruiser Skirmisher on 2 January, 1908.[4]

He grounded her in 1909 and was found to have committed an error in judgment. Their Lordships cautioned him to be more careful in future.[5]

Reeves attended the Royal Naval War College from 6 March 1911. He passed out in June with First Class as fourth of ten captains, noted as "V.G."

On 9 July 1913, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Liverpool.[6] He was still in her at the outbreak of the war.[7]

In August 1915, Reeves moved over to take command of the light cruiser Birkenhead, and was in her as part of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron during the Battle of Jutland, signing her report on the action.[8]

Appointed as Captain of Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport on 1 February, 1919 as Commodore, Second Class.[9]

Reeves was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 17 June, 1921 and placed on Retired List on own request the next day.[10]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 8 July, 1926.[11]

Reeves succumbed to senile decay on 4 March, 1954.[12]
